Initial Oral Examination Your initial oral examination includes a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis and treatment recommendations. We will also take x-rays, which includes the panoramic x-ray for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth as well as the bite-wing x-ray series for proper diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.
Porcelain Veneers Porcelain laminate veneers are one of the most esthetic means of creating a more pleasing and beautiful smile. They require a minimal amount of tooth reduction (approximately .5 mm ) and are, therefore, a more conservative restoration than a crown. Porcelain veneers allow us to alter tooth position, shape, size and color. They are not the only alternative for all esthetic abnormalities but are truly a remarkable restoration when they are the treatment of choice.
Root Canal Therapy Endodontics is a branch of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association involving treatment of the pulp (root canal) and surrounding tissues of the tooth. When you look at your tooth in the mirror, what you see is the crown. The rest of the tooth, hidden beneath the gum line, is called the root. Though the outer portion of the root is a hard tissue called dentin, the inside channel or "root canal" contains a pulp of soft tissue, blood vessels and nerves. Bacteria that are introduced into the pulp as a result of tooth decay, periodontal disease, tooth fracture or other problems, can severely damage the pulp. When that happens, an endodontic specialist removes the diseased pulp to save the tooth and prevent further infection and inflammation. After successful endodontic treatment, the tooth continues to perform normally. We perform most endontic procedures in our office. In most cases there is no need for another appointment outside of Dr. Sims Dentistry.
Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease is the chief cause of tooth loss in adults. Often there are warnings, but sometimes there are no signs at all. Periodontal disease has been called "the silent epidemic". Periodontal disease, involves a bacterial infection of the teeth and gums. The bacteria is referred to as dental plaque which then turns into calculus or tartar. Calculus and tarter work under the gums, down the root of the tooth, creating pockets or spaces between the teeth and gums. Periodontal therapy is directed at; 1) Cleaning the infected areas around the root surfaces, 2) Teaching you how to effectively clean your teeth and 3) Minimizing the damages associated with the spread of the infection. Our clinical team will evaluate your condition and recommend the best therapy for your individual case. Periodontal therapy has been shown to be an effective way to help you keep your teeth. Ninety-eight percent of patients with excellent home care respond favorably to periodontal therapy. A commitment to a lifetime of health can help you preserve your teeth for as long as possible.
Dental Implants We will work with an implant specialist to create an implant for a missing single tooth, missing multiple teeth, or replace a removable appliance.
Teeth Whitening Our state-of-the-art, in-office Power Bleaching system will make your teeth whiter in less than 1.5 hours. Another option is our home bleaching system you take with you for results in 2 weeks. You can also consider a combination program of both systems for optimal, long-term results. Please visit our "Whitening for Life" page for our whitening program.
Fillings: Resin (same tooth colored) Tooth-colored fillings that are light cures to match your teeth. Amalgam: Silver-colored fillings, more durable material.
Periodontal Treatment You should have a standard cleaning at least twice a year. A periodontal treatment includes an Adult Prophy (basic cleaning). If it has been over a year since your last cleaning, possible treatment will include either Periodontal Scaling (deeper) or Root Planning and Scaling (requires anesthetic).
Mouth Guards Whether you are an athlete or casual sports participant, you should wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth. If you grind your teeth while you sleep, a bite guard will help reduce symptoms of TMJ. We custom make mouth guards in both soft and hard materials.
Removable Dental Prosthesis For missing teeth, we can make dentures or removable partials for you.
